Frequently Asked Questions

What does this actually
mean for me?

Nobody wakes up excited to read policies, processes or explanations.

So we've put together some straightforward answers about what Veterans Backbone is, what we're building and where things currently stand.

Veterans Backbone is currently being established. We are not yet a registered charity, and our veteran support services have not launched.

We don't bite. Usually. ♥

Right now? We're building the foundations.

Veterans Backbone is being established to help veterans navigate life when it's gone a bit sideways.

Our first goal is a community-based support service that can offer practical guidance, help people navigate existing services, connect the dots and follow things through.

We're not looking to replace organisations already doing good work. We want to help make those services easier to navigate.

In short: we're building something to help join the dots when life has scattered them all over the bloody floor.

But we're not operational yet, so we aren't currently accepting support cases.

Not yet.

Veterans Backbone is being established with the intention of becoming a registered charity.

We're developing the governance, safeguarding arrangements, operational procedures and other foundations needed to do things properly.

Until registration is confirmed, we won't describe ourselves as a registered charity.

Although, registered or not, we still have absolutely no intention of becoming beige.

No.

Veterans Backbone is not being established as a therapy, counselling or psychiatric treatment service.

We want to provide practical support, information and help navigating services, including appropriate specialist services when they're needed.

We won't pretend to provide clinical treatment or expertise we don't have.

And none of those services are being delivered by VB yet.

Absolutely not.

You don't get bonus points for suffering in silence.

You shouldn't have to wait until life is on fire before asking for help.

Frankly, we'd rather build a service that can help people before things become a complete clusterfuck.

Our support service isn't open yet, though. If you need help now, please contact an established support organisation.

Then we wouldn't want to force you.

Took the founder years to do that, so it's fine.

Some people talk.

Some people walk.

Some people build things.

Some people sit quietly with a brew for six months before saying anything meaningful.

All acceptable.

We want our future support to respect people's boundaries, communication preferences and individual circumstances.

You clearly haven't read the website.

Because humans swear.

Veterans swear.

Life swears at people regularly.

More importantly, because we'd rather sound like real people than a leaflet written by two committees and a legal department.

Being professional doesn't mean having to sound like a bloody robot.

That's exactly the kind of thing we don't want Veterans Backbone to do.

We've all got a history.

We've all made mistakes.

We've all looked back at certain decisions and thought:

"Well... that was a fucking terrible idea."

Our approach will be about treating people with dignity, respect and without unnecessary judgement.

We're interested in where you're going. Not just where you've been.

Join the club.

Life doesn't always go according to plan. Sometimes it goes spectacularly wrong.

The important bit is what happens next.

That's the thinking behind the practical support we're developing.

Not something you need to worry about with us just yet.

Our support service hasn't launched, so we aren't currently accepting referrals or opening cases.

Our aim is to make accessing future support as straightforward as possible, while still having appropriate eligibility, safeguarding and assessment processes.

You shouldn't need three forms, four signatures and a blood sample just to understand where to start.

We'll explain the actual referral arrangements when the service is ready.

No.

Veterans Backbone is not currently an accommodation provider, and we don't have residential accommodation available.

Our initial priority is community-based support, not running accommodation.

When our service is operational, we hope to help veterans navigate existing housing and homelessness support where appropriate.

We would never promise someone a home or accommodation that we cannot actually provide.

First things first: Veterans Backbone doesn't currently operate accommodation or have beds to allocate.

Our first planned service is about helping veterans access existing services, including housing support from organisations equipped to provide it.

If another organisation has no vacancies, we won't pretend otherwise.

The longer-term idea of Veterans Backbone offering accommodation is just that — a future ambition. It isn't an available service.

No imaginary beds. No false promises. No corporate waffle.

How long is a piece of string?

We don't believe everyone's journey should have exactly the same timetable.

Our planned support approach recognises that some people may need a little guidance, while others may need more time and follow-up.

Any actual support arrangements will depend on individual needs, eligibility, available resources and the service we are able to establish.

We won't promise unlimited support, but we don't want arbitrary deadlines deciding when someone's challenges magically disappear either.

No.

People aren't broken kettles.

Most veterans don't need fixing.

They may need understanding, practical support, information, opportunities or someone willing to listen properly.

And occasionally someone willing to tell them they're being a stubborn idiot.

Respectfully, of course.

Our future approach is about working with people, not deciding who they should become.

There isn't a hidden agenda.

Veterans Backbone is being established to provide practical support for veterans experiencing disadvantage.

Our intention is that our core veteran support service will be free to the veterans using it.

No miracle programme. No magic wand. No pretending we can solve every problem on the planet.

Just a commitment to building something useful, responsible and genuinely human.

But remember, we're still in development and the service hasn't launched yet.

No. And let's make that absolutely clear.

Our founder hasn't worn the uniform and would never pretend to have experienced military service.

But you don't have to have worn the uniform to care about the person who did.

The founder has experienced her own battles with serious illness, trauma, rebuilding her life and systems that don't always work together when people need them.

Those experiences aren't the same as military service, and we wouldn't claim they are.

What they do provide is an understanding of what it's like to struggle, to fight to be heard and to need someone who genuinely gives a shit.

Veterans Backbone is intended to be built for veterans, informed by veterans and supported by people who care, whether they've served or not.

Same scars.
Different battlefield.

Not just yet.

We're still establishing the organisation, developing our systems and preparing for charity registration.

Our veteran support service is not operational, and we cannot currently take on individual support cases.

If you need help now, please approach an established veterans' support organisation or an appropriate local service.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999.

For general questions about the Veterans Backbone project, you're welcome to contact us.

Still can't find the bloody answer?

Ask us.

Got a question about Veterans Backbone, our plans or how we're developing the organisation?

You don't need the right department, the right wording or a perfectly polished email.

We can answer general questions about the project, but we're not yet able to provide individual veteran support.
